I've met a few who work as overnight cleaners up in the Roundhouse lodge every night on top of the mountain. The cool thing was that they could ride home at the end of their shift or be first in line for a mega pow dump as they are already up there all night.

Groomers also work during the night shift grooming all the runs and stuff.

Try the Westin - Overnight IRD (Room Service). The pay is about $25 hr or better with all the tips plus the job is a breeze. I see they are hiring right now for IRD and you can bet it's the overnight shift they have available. That shift is usually available year round at the big hotels for various duties.

The Westin and other big hotels also have staff housing of some kind but there pass discount is only like 70% off then they take the rest out of your check each pay.

Thanks John your information has helped heaps, when we get to whistler i'll buy you a beer or 2 aye.

the staff accom for WB sounds great due to how cheap it is lol. the pay isnt spectacular but i guess it off sets for the cheap accom and free lift pass, which is awesome!!

originally for jobs we thought to look for the best paying as we would need it for the high rent. but ideally we would like 3 or 4 days work (30hours) so we can still ride/ski alot. both of us are happy to work nights or even gravyard shifts if it meant we could get up the mountain more. what job at WB has a graveyard shift, if any?

thanks again,

Hi Ian, welcome to Whistler Outfitters.

April is a great time to come to Whistler. I see by looking at your avatar that you are coming for the incredible bike park and local mountain trails! Whistler is the best place on earth to ride so I hope you are getting excited about coming.

During April, loads of people ship out of Whistler including Aussies like yourself who have finished their visas. Sometimes they take off in April to see other parts of Canada before their visas expire.

What this means to you is that there will be space opening up for accommodation, private and employee housing situations.

Also, Whistler Blackcomb and other local companies make their employees who receive complimentary passes for the year, they make them sign a contract that guarantees they will all work until April or they have to pay the full season pass price. Lots of people see this contract through and then the very next day are finished.

April is also a fabulous month for Whistler because the Ski and Snowboard Festival (biggest of it's kind) takes place with over 50 free concerts and awesome spring skiing and snowboarding.

What kind of work are the two of you looking to do? Let me know so I can share some advice. At your age, I would immediately suggest considering Whistler Blackcomb as an employer. Then try to slip into their staff housing in Whistler which is super cheap and you will make friends quickly. You do not have to stay in staff housing if you choose that path but it's a good place to land.

Staff housing is full right now but will start to open up when you plan to arrive in April.

If you have your visas lined up already and can prove your able to work legally you can nearly get hired via online applications at Whistler Blackcomb, Westin Resort and Spa, Four Seasons Hotel and others. Of course all hires require interview but you will get a head start. I have also heard of Whistler job fairs that take place in Australia. I will hunt that info down for you if it is available.

A word of advice to newcomers to Whistler:
Bring enough money to keep you going for 2 months in case you don't get hired by Whistler Blackcomb and need to find accommodation in the Village:
Rent $600/month
Damage deposit $300
Enough to survive for up to 2 months without a paycheque:
$40/week for groceries X 8 weeks = $320
Other potential costs:
Phone and/or hydro deposit $200 each
Entertainment, transportation costs, phone bills min. $1500 is advisable

Copy and paste these links for more info:

Whistler Blackcomb employment =
whistlerblackcomb.com/employment/jobs/index.htm

Westin - Westin is often looking for an overnight In Room Dining Server (Room Service) That's a good riding days off gig with decent cash flow =
208.181.190.117/careers.php

Four Seasons =
fourseasons.com/employment/

There are over a hundred choices and employers eager to have you in April.

I will also share that tipped jobs like Bellman, Valet and Servers at big hotels in Whistler have the best jobs in Whistler at your age. What you should seek out is a job with at least 4-5 days a week with AMs off. You preferably should seek PM jobs if at all possible. It's hard to get an all PM job, easy to get an Overnight gig and easy to find a job in Whistler that will vary your shifts so you can have some days off.

This is critical because the last thing you want to happen to you is a 50 centimeter perfect bluebird day comes along and you are stuck working as a lifty loading all your buddies on the lifts all day. If I were you both I would first seek a graveyard gig with Whistler Blackcomb or a big Hotel in town. That way you can ride or ski every single day and on your days off you will be fresh at the late night parties (believe me, Whistler is a 24 hour party).

I know quite a few other Aussies personally that have taken that exact journey and racked up hundreds of snow and bike days.

Another thing to ask about is the possible extension you can get to increase your visa from 1 year to 2 years. You will have to ask each employer for details about that.

Hope this helps.

Hey everyone, i've read alot of the topics and i can tell your all very nice and helpful. But there is not much talk about anyone getting to whistler in april to set up for the summer and hopefully stay on for winter...

A friend and I (two 20yr old aussie males) will be arriving in whistler approx 2nd April '08. We are both mountainbikers and skiers so we hope to stay for a full year.

We have been told to wait and set up accom in person for safety reasons, and whats the best way to go about getting a job, do you need references, etc?

So i was just curious if anyone has some advice or tips on getting the cheapest/best accommodation, and if we are coming at an all right time?

Any comments will be greatly appreciated,
Ian

Construction has been completed on all three of the Whistler Olympic and Paralympic competition venues. Thanks to the efforts of a 2,500-strong workforce recruited from across British Columbia and Canada, athletes will be able to train at these Olympic venues more than two years before the Vancouver 2010 Games begin. The venues in Whistler, which will host 46 Olympic medal events and 62 Paralympic medal events, will offer a legacy for high performance and recreational use, both before and long after the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

Venue Openings
During the Games, Whistler Olympic Park will host the biathlon, cross-country skiing, Nordic combined and ski jumping events; the Whistler Sliding Centre will host bobsleigh, luge and skeleton events; and Whistler Creekside will host the Alpine skiing events. While Whistler Creekside has been operational since the beginning of the 2007-08 ski season, the Whistler Olympic Park only opened its doors for its first competition and to the public this weekend, and the Whistler Sliding Centre will undergo detailed fit-out and testing over the next few months.

Spectacular Theatres
“Every construction worker and member of our venue team put their hearts into this project and is standing atop their own podium today,” said John Furlong, the Chief Executive Officer of the Vancouver 2010 Organising Committee. “Their efforts are helping us to meet our commitment to deliver spectacular theatres for sport and lasting community legacies, and we are following through on our promise to offer athletes the chance to train and compete at a world-class level more than two years in advance of the Games.”

Sustainability
As well as being finished in time to allow the athletes plenty of chances to train on the venues before the Games, the 2010 venues in Whistler have also been constructed with sustainability in mind. Some of these sustainability measures include building the venues to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environment Design) standards, recycling wood waste on-site, and reusing captured waste heat. In addition, Squamish and Lil’wat Nations-owned companies completed 50% of the construction work at Whistler Olympic Park, which led to additional business opportunities for the First Nations in the Sea-to-Sky corridor.

VANCOUVER 2010
Vancouver and Whistler will host the XXI Olympic Winter Games from 12 to 28 February 2010 and the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games from 12 to 21 March 2010. The seven Winter Olympic sports that will be on show in Vancouver are luge, skiing, skating, ice hockey, biathlon, bobsleigh and curling.

Vancouver, B.C. – Today, British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC) is pleased to release First Tickets to 2010, a new $5 SportsFunder Instant Win ticket offering players the chance to win the very first tickets to the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games Opening Ceremony.

“We are very proud to offer British Columbians the first chance to get tickets for this once-in-a-lifetime event,” said Dana Hayden, BCLC President & CEO. “The thrill and excitement of the Olympic Games is inspiring and moves people to participate in sports. Through SportsFunder lottery games, BCLC is offering the opportunity to support amateur athletes, many of whom aspire to compete at the Olympic level.”

With a total of 100 pairs of tickets to be won, players have a 1:5,000 chance of winning tickets to the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games Opening Ceremony. In addition to offering the chance to win tickets to the Opening Ceremony and $1,000 spending money, the new $5 SportsFunder First Tickets to 2010 also features $1 million in cash prizes. The overall odds of winning any prize are approximately 1:4.

“On the evening of February 12, 2010, the eyes of the world will be on us as we celebrate Canada at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games Opening Ceremony. VANOC is proud to partner with BCLC to give British Columbians a chance to attend this extraordinary event, while helping our kids and amateur athletes have increased access to sports”, said John Furlong, CEO of the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC).

Over the next two years, BCLC will offer British Columbians the chance to win thousands of tickets to the 2010 Winter Games by playing SportsFunder lottery games. Proceeds from the sale of SportsFunder lottery games support amateur sports in B.C. through KidSport™, Team BC, Youth Sport Travel Assistance, and Coach and Leadership Development. KidSport™ provides financial assistance to children who wish to play sports but cannot afford the registration fees. Team BC gives athletic development support to provincial teams representing B.C. at Canada’s premier multi-sport events.

Tickets used for SportsFunder lottery games will be purchased by BCLC and drawn from their allotment as a VANOC Official Supporter within the Olympic Family quota. As is required of all Olympic Organizing Committees, approximately 30 per cent of the tickets will be held for key partners that participate directly in the staging of the Games – commonly referred to as the Olympic Family. The Olympic Family includes athletes and their families, National Olympic Committees and international sports federations, media and broadcasters who tell the story of the Games to a global audience and VANOC sponsors whose financial investment contributes directly to staging the Games.

“This is also a good example of how an Olympic partner may purchase from the Olympic Family ticket allotment but the tickets ultimately end up in the hands of the public,” added Furlong.

About BCLC

umm its not hard to get a visa... working holiday visa is what ur looking for... they just expanded the program to 2 year visas as well and lifted the cap... u dont need a letter of invitiation unless ur over the 30 year old age limit and ur going for more of a skilled worker permit... which is more costly anyhow

well it's very hard to find a company who would write a letter of invitation. basically without the invitation there is noway to get the work permit.

anyway. we'll arrive in whistler on the 10.th of October and hopefully everything goes well and we get employed.

Hello everybody!

I'm now moving to Whistler in the beginning of October and was thinking maybe it's useful to take my skateboard with me? Is there a indoor skatepark for skating? In October till mid November there is not so much of snow there and I was thinking of skating a little instead of snowboarding.

Also is there some trampolines where I could practice jumps?

Peace,

Your chances are not that good. You will need proper documentation to work in Whistler unless of course you can survive on savings or a trust fund or the like.
People without proper work documents are rounded up by the RCMP and deported. The company that was employing them is often fined by the authorities.

My advice is do not expect to work easily without a visa.

well some employers provide u with a lift pass for the season. such as the mtn... starbucks... various others such as some of the hotels. or even a discounted pass... most other employers enable u to get a spirit pass which is the locals employee pass which runs about $1100. as for volunteering. i did it for two seasons. i believe the positions are mountain safety, events and food and bev has some volunteer seat seeker positions as well. the food and bev ones are the cruisiest by far. i did events for 2 years and its cool cuz u get to get up close to the comps and races held throughout the year but its a fairly big time commitment as in if u have 2 days off a week from ur job expect to on the hill volunteering for one of them. may not seem like much but when its puking snow out and ur watching a race gate and ur friends are riding pow... last 2 seasons i just shelled out for a lift pass... that way im beholden to no one and i maximize my riding time. try and find an evening job as well... that way u can ride before work. nothing beats 5-6 runs of knee deep pow before heading off to work.

Hey

Thanks a lot. Read the document but it only really talks about canadian gambling companies and the lagalities of that, still quite interesting though. From what i can work out betting online is a bit of a legal grey area. You definatly cant set up a gambling company in canada but it seems not to be illegal to use them, but not specifically legal either. However no one has ever been prosecuted for using them so i guess ill just carry on as normal and hope im not the first!

Hi Another Seasonaire question im afraid! Im planning on heading out the end of october and have had most of my questions answered on other threads. I Imagine this sounds like an odd question but is it legal to use internet gambling sites in BC? As i make quite a bit of my income from internet bookies. Also is budgeting 600cad a month for a room reasonable?

thanks for the link, looks good to me, im planning on booking with the hostel in the next day or two.
ill definately buy my gear in whistler, the turkey sale sounds good, ill probly buy a new board, i already know which board/s i want so i just need to find them. does this sale go down in october?
one more thing in regards to a lift ticket, i read in one of the other topics that its possible to get a ticket, or a discounted ticket if you help out the mountain with some volunteer work. this sounds good to me as i want to get a lift ticket for the season so whenever im not working ill be snowboarding, but dont want to fork out over a grand on it. any advice on how i can go about this?
cheers

Hi long time no visit,
Well I finally got a place, In the marquise upper village for $1300 + utils and I am mega happy about it, I assume from previous posts this is a decent price. A very cool english chap (Tom) at rocky-peak holidays is hosting as a landlord for us on behalf of the owner.
The place looks great, Now im just trying to sort other things such as insurance.
So in keeping with tradition, I have a few questions:
Does anyone recommend any home contents insurance companies or Laptop insurance companies in BC?
Does having "Foodsafe" give you an advantage when applying for work in restaurants.
Myself and girlfriend have a fair experience in serving in the UK as we took up part-time jobs when initially dreaming up the idea to come to whistler.
Do companies in whistler sponsor via a PNP, is there any more news on the scheme to allow people to stay for 24 months?
As always, any advice appriciated.
Thanks
Scott

There is a good hostel in Whistler but you must reserve way in advance as you can imagine. Here is a link

There is a great big sale in Whistler called the Turkey Sale that takes place before the season starts. There you can find good deals on all sorts of snowboards, new and used. That is where you will find the best deal. Be careful purchasing boards at the Turkey sale if you get a used one. Make sure it still has plenty of camber and flex and some good edges.

This sale is sort of like a rock concert and you should show up early and wait in line for them to open the gates to get the best deal. If you show up to the Turkey sale late then forget it as all good deals will be gone.

Definitely buy your snowboard in Whistler. Avoid the clearance center as most of what they offer is second grade or lower quality.

The Turkey sale has everything, boots, pants, helmets - everything you will need.

During my first season I hooked up with a Burton BMC at the Turkey sale that was in good shape (Burton's top freeride board at the time) with good CFX bindings on it for $400. The BMC board itself used to retail for $900 and the bindings retail for about $300 so that was a good deal even though it was slightly used.

I did however notice a huge difference once I finally got a brand new board. It was much easier to learn on and to ride compared to the used board because the flex was awesome.

I say save your cash and bring it to Whistler, avoid Vancouver and the Clearance stores in Squamish and Whistler and go for a good board either at the Turkey sale or in a Whistler shop like Summit, Showcase, Comor etc. All of these stores will be having huge sales during fall/early winter on last year's "new" boards that are leftover. Sometimes up to 50% off!

Another reason to buy local in Whistler is because they will honor your sale. If something goes wrong then you can take it to the local shop you bought it from for repairs, replacement etc. so local is best. Always.
i was just wondering if you guys knew any good hostels in Whistler. if not whats are best/cheapest accomodation? obviously im looking for cheap accomodation once i get there and i havnt really found much on the internet in terms of hostels.
also, ive decided to buy a new board in Canada, ive been told they are much cheaper in Canada due to the bigger market. whats the best place to buy in Whistler? just looking for a good quality board at a decent price.
or is it better to buy a board in Vancouver? or is the outfitters clearance store the only way to go?
any info is much appreciated

thanks

Whistler News :: Canada Day party in Whistler WINNER Red Bull Elevation

Red Bull Elevation dropped onto Whistler Mountain and wished Canada happy birthday with champion Ryan Nyquist and 31 of the world's best riders delivering awe-inspiring double back flips, triple tailwhips, and flying high supermans. Known as the most progressive contest in BMX dirt-jumping, Red Bull Elevation again pushed the sport to new levels providing a course for riders to showcase a barrage of best trick combinations and first-ever jumps. Once the dust settled on the competition, Metric took over and sealed a high energy Canada Day weekend with a killer set that kept fans partying well into the Whistler Village night.

Red Bull Elevation again lived up to the hype of being the best dirt competition in the world by building a course that featured more transfers, more berms and bigger sets. It took two full days of practice for the riders to get comfortable and pick their lines for the event finals on Sunday. It was certainly worth it as Nyquist and Corey Bohan went toe-to-toe all day with Nyquist edging out defending Elevation champion Bohan by one-tenth of a point to claim the title.

"Red Bull Elevation is the best contest of the year for dirt jumping and the course is always the best course of the year," said California-native and 2005 winner Nyquist. "Everything is just perfect; this is one for the memory books - that's for sure."

Despite an injured wrist and a borrowed bike from an earlier crash, Nyquist rode seamlessly in heats two through five, throwing down some of the best runs of the day including 720's over the step up and double back flipping the 27-foot bottom jump. With his win, Nyquist pocketed the grand prize of $10,000. Bohan, who also had a massive day on the course took home $7,000 for his second place finish and Brian Foster proved that age doesn't matter in this contest, as the 35-year-old took home third place and a cool $5,000.

"Red Bull Elevation is the showcase of BMX dirt jump contests," said Bohan. "Third one in a row out here in Whistler and this one was one to remember forever - they built the sickest course ever!"

Judges graded the riders on trails style, difficulty of their lines and how clean they landed their tricks. After the Elevation competition, all riders were invited to the Big Hit for a 20 minute best-trick session, where the $5,000 prize went to James Foster who nailed an unbelievable truck driver to 360 downside tailwhip. "Words cannot describe what I'm feeling right now," said a breathless Foster. "I'm banking this win money and enjoying it later, what a rush!"

Red Bull Elevation blazed onto the BMX scene in 2005, taking the sport to new levels by bringing dirt-jumping back to the trails and became known world-wide as the must-attend contest for international top riders. Kokanee Crankworx presents WomenzWorx, the first event of its kind in North America with two days of freeride mountain bike clinics and competitions for women only. The event kicks off Monday, July 23 in the Whistler Mountain Bike Park.

In its first year, WomenzWorx promises to draw women of all ability levels to the Whistler Mountain Bike Park to take part in the event’s clinics and competitions. Kokanee Crankworx is offering a free bike park day ticket to the first 100 women who hit the bike park on July 23 and 24. As well, there will be women’s only half-day bike park clinics. There is also on-hill training for The Gala, WomenzWorx’s girls only freeride event to be held on Tuesday July 24th.

The Gala competition and The Dirty Girl’s Gala social event at Merlin’s, were organized by pro riders Katrina Strand and Lisa Lefroy. The event will give ladies a chance to show off their skills and compete for a Pro Prize Purse of $2,800.

With the success of Kokanee Crankworx and the number of women involved in mountain biking, WomenzWorx is poised to become a huge part of the Kokanee Crankworx festival.

“We are hoping to promote the progression of women’s mountain biking in the Whistler Bike Park by providing different outlets for women to learn, dial or showcase their skills in The Gala,” says Christa Vandeberg, Kokanee Crankworx Logistics Supervisor.

The Gala will have pro and amateur athletes riding, train and competing on a freeride course that spans from the Garbanzo zone to Whistler Village. There will be four judging sections marked off and riders will receive scores based on specific criteria.

“The course design aims to cover most aspects of freeride mountain biking: jumps, air, technical descent and slopestyle,” says Lefroy. “We have chosen a course that will both challenge the pros and be suitable for amateur riders.”

“If a certain station is beyond what you'd like to ride, then you don't need to ride it – the athlete will not receive points for that station, but will gain in the main goals of the event: fun, progression and camaraderie. We want as many girls out riding as possible,” Strand adds.

Kokanee Crankworx is presented in partnership by Tourism Whistler, Whistler Blackcomb and the Resort Municipality of Whistler. Whistler has the world’s most diverse offering of mountain biking terrain, attracting all disciplines of mountain biking. From 150 miles of single-track trails and 200 km of lift-accessed downhill runs in the Whistler Mountain Bike Park, to jump parks and the 20-plus miles of paved Valley Trail, there’s something for every rider.

Hi Defoe! Welcome to the forum.

Defoej18 wrote:

Hello there.

Where are the best places to fish?

Vancouver has plenty of lakes and rivers plus the ocean for you. Squamish (just north of Vancouver) is a good place to fish this summer and fall as the Pink Salmon come in full force every odd year. This year should be good! You can find them in the rivers.

What tackle is needed?

Tackle depends on where you fish. Check the link above for restrictions on certain areas. You cannot use bait or a barbed hook in the rivers. Most lakes are cool to fish with whatever you like unless you find restrictions on that list.

Do I need a licence?

Yes, you need a freshwater fishing license for lakes and rivers. Plus a Salmon stamp if you intend to try for Salmon. Also mind the quota for salmon listed in a book you can get at any bait shop. Saltwater fishing requires a separate license.

I dont fly fish...I use spinners and floats and such...Is this OK?

Yes this is fine, just follow the rules found in the BC Fishing manual which is free at any bait shop.

Is it the season for Trout? Salmon? Or are these species of fish always around?

Trout can be found in the deep areas of the lakes as it gets hot. Salmon are plenty this year in the rivers and tidal areas. Salmon are seasonal. Trout are always here.

Can I fish of the rocks around the coast for Cod and Hallibut...or do I need a boat for the Hallibut...Ive fished in Norway and you can practically catch Cod anywhere...decent size is suppose. Can you do the same here?

I don't know about Halibut, I believe Halibut to be an Atlantic fish. Also Halibut are way out in the deep. There are tons of fish in the Pacific that you can catch from shore but all species will be different than Norway.

Thanks for your help.

Hi
well the landlord we were about to book with let us down, he decided to start talking USD rather than CAD as we originally thought. My assumption was he changed his mind at last minute.
Anyway. we have a few properties on the list as we are still desperately seeking accomodation.
does anyone know what market pavillion is like , i.e the area is it noisy, much traffic, walking distance to slopes?
Cheers.
